The current safety briefing add-on is a pre-trip session in Labuan Bajo, run by a dive guide, that teaches how tidal flow behaves at Batu Bolong and how to dive it without being surprised. It is bought separately from any trip and takes place before your first boat day, usually the evening before, so that the channel briefing happens on solid ground with time to ask questions rather than on a moving deck five minutes before entry. Divers who take it tend to be the ones the guide clears for the pinnacle.
Why does Batu Bolong need its own briefing?
Because the site’s hazard is not depth or visibility, it is water moving in three dimensions around a pinnacle that sits in a strait. Flow accelerates as it squeezes past the rock, splits around it, and can push downward on the far side, which is a different problem from a straightforward horizontal drift and needs a different response from the diver.
Most divers arriving in Komodo have drift experience from sites where the water carries you in one direction and the plan is simply to go with it. That instinct is not enough here. The briefing exists to replace instinct with a plan you rehearse before you need it.

The session is delivered as instruction and discussion, not as a certification course, and it does not issue a card or a qualification. It is preparation. Anyone claiming a one-evening session substitutes for training would be selling you something false.

How does the session run?
Sessions are held in Labuan Bajo, last a single evening, and are run for one group at a time rather than as a rolling class, so the content adapts to who is in the room. A group of four experienced divers preparing for a charter gets a different emphasis from a couple who certified last week, and running them together would serve neither.
The guide uses the actual tide table for your dive dates, so the timing discussion is about your trip rather than a generic example. That is the part divers report as most useful: seeing why their boat leaves at an odd hour, and what would have happened if it left two hours later.
Does taking it guarantee you dive Batu Bolong?
No, and any promise otherwise would be dishonest. The decision to dive the pinnacle on a given day belongs to the guide in the water, and rests on two things: the conditions that day, and their assessment of the divers in front of them. The briefing improves the second of those, and has no effect at all on the first.
What it reliably changes is what happens when the answer is no. A diver who understands why the flow reading rules out the site takes the substitution calmly and dives well somewhere else, instead of spending the day feeling cheated. That is worth the fee on its own.
How do you add it to a booking?

The add-on is arranged by a person over WhatsApp or email; it is not a self-service product, because it has to be slotted against your boat schedule and the guide’s roster.

Is this a certification course?

If you want a formal qualification in drift or deep diving, that is a training agency course delivered by a dive centre over multiple days, and we will point you to one rather than blur the difference.
How long before my dive should I take it?
The evening before your first boat day works best, because the information is fresh and the tide discussion is about tomorrow rather than an abstract example. Taking it several days early is still useful but loses that immediacy. Taking it the same morning is not offered, since the point is to give you time to think and ask questions without a departure clock running.
Can non-divers or snorkellers attend?
Snorkellers are welcome and often benefit, because surface swimmers feel channel flow more directly than divers do and the boundary, recall, and pickup content applies to them unchanged. Complete non-swimmers get little from it. If your group is mixed, tell us the split and the guide will weight the session accordingly rather than pitching everything at divers.
Does it cover what to do if I lose the group?
Yes, and it is one of the longest segments. The session covers the immediate search action, the time limit before you ascend, how to manage an ascent when water is moving you, surface marker buoy deployment, and how the pickup boat searches. You rehearse the signal set on land so that using it underwater is recall rather than improvisation.
