The Advanced Open Water and Batu Bolong bundle is a multi-day Labuan Bajo booking that pairs an advanced-level certification course with a guided dive at Batu Bolong as the closing dive of the programme. The sequence matters more than the discount: the course puts deep, navigation, and drift work into your logbook first, so that by the time you descend on the pinnacle you have already practised holding position in moving water under instruction. Batu Bolong is scheduled last for that reason, not as a bonus.
Why does the bundle put Batu Bolong at the end?
Batu Bolong sits in a channel inside Komodo National Park where tidal flow speeds up as it passes the rock, and the sheltered face is dived by holding station rather than swimming freely. A diver who has just completed structured drift and deep dives arrives at that face with the exact skills the site asks for, which is why we refuse to sell the pinnacle as the first dive of a course week.
The advanced course also gives an instructor several days of watching how you actually behave underwater rather than what your card says. That observation is what clears you for the final dive. If it does not clear you, the bundle finishes at a calmer site and nobody has to argue about it at the mooring.
What is in the bundle?
- An advanced-level certification course delivered across consecutive days from Labuan Bajo
- Adventure dives selected to build toward channel conditions, typically including deep and drift components
- One guided dive at Batu Bolong as the closing dive, scheduled inside the calmest tidal window available
- Tanks, weights, and rental of BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, and fins for every dive in the programme
- Boat transfers from Labuan Bajo harbour on departure times set by the tide table, not a fixed clock
- Site-specific current briefings before each entry, including an abort plan for the pinnacle
Course materials, agency registration, and certification processing are handled and quoted by the dive centre that delivers your training. Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fees are set by the park authority, apply per person, and appear as a separate line at the published rate for your dates. We keep those three cost blocks visibly separate so you can see what is ours and what is not.
Who should book this rather than a single dive?
This is written for divers who hold an entry-level certification, have some dives logged, and want Komodo’s channel sites to be a normal part of their diving rather than a one-off gamble. If your ambition is only to see Batu Bolong once, the Open Water plus Batu Bolong upgrade is the cheaper and more honest route.
Divers who already hold an advanced certification and want harder conditions rather than more training should look at the advanced current specialty trip, which skips the coursework and goes straight to sites chosen for flow. Divers on the fence about their readiness for either can start with the current safety briefing add-on, which is a land-based session and costs a fraction of a course.
How is the course week sequenced?
| Stage | Focus | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| Day one | Skill refresh and buoyancy assessment | Establishes the baseline the instructor will judge against |
| Day one to two | Deep adventure dive | Gas planning and narcosis awareness before channel depth |
| Day two | Drift or peak performance buoyancy work | Teaches holding position while water moves you |
| Day two to three | Navigation and elective dives | Builds independence from the guide’s fin tips |
| Final day | Guided Batu Bolong dive | Applies everything above, in the calmest window on the tide |
The exact order flexes with weather and tide, which is why the bundle is quoted as a block of days rather than a fixed hour-by-hour itinerary. The one fixed rule is that Batu Bolong is never moved earlier to suit a flight; if your schedule collapses, the pinnacle is the dive that gets dropped.
What conditions will you meet at the pinnacle?
Batu Bolong is known for unusually dense hard coral cover on a steep slope, with reef fish packed onto the sheltered face and larger schooling species working the edges where flow accelerates. Water in northern Komodo National Park is generally warm enough for a thin wetsuit, while southern sites in the park run cooler, and visibility on the pinnacle swings widely with tide state and season.
None of that is a forecast. Your instructor briefs the actual conditions on the day, and the plan can change between the boat leaving the harbour and the boat reaching the mooring. Anyone who promises you a specific visibility figure for a date months out is guessing, and we would rather not.
How is the bundle booked?
Send your travel window, your current certification level, your logged dive count, and the date of your most recent dive, and we return a written quote with the number of days needed and the tide pattern across them. Everything is confirmed by a person over WhatsApp or email rather than an instant checkout, because a course week has to be fitted around boat availability and tide before a price means anything.
We are an independent Komodo dive travel operator. Certification levels and course names are referred to only to describe the training you are booking; we do not present ourselves as an agent, dealer, sponsor, or officially appointed representative of any training agency, dive centre, or vessel named in your itinerary. Where a third party sets its own schedule, price, or entry requirement, that is stated in writing in your quote.
Frequently asked questions
How many days should I allow for the bundle?
Plan on several consecutive diving days plus at least one spare day before your flight. The course itself occupies most of the block, and the Batu Bolong dive needs a workable tidal window on the final day. Without a spare day, a single weather cancellation removes the pinnacle from your trip entirely, which is the most common disappointment we see and the easiest one to avoid.
What if I do not pass the course in time?
The course is completed at your pace, and an instructor will not sign off skills that are not there. If your progress runs past the days you booked, we quote the extra days rather than compress the syllabus, and the Batu Bolong dive moves to the new final day if your schedule allows. If it does not, the pinnacle dive is refunded or moved to a calmer site.
Is an advanced certification enough to dive Batu Bolong safely?
A card is a prerequisite, not a clearance. The guide still assesses your buoyancy, air consumption, and comfort in flow before the pinnacle dive, and still reads the actual current on the day before deciding. Divers who complete the course but are visibly struggling with position-holding are moved to a sheltered site instead, and that decision belongs to the person in the water with you.
Can two divers at different levels book together?
Yes, and it is common. One partner takes the advanced course while the other joins the same boat as a certified fun diver on the same sites, then both dive Batu Bolong together on the final day if the guide clears them. Tell us both certification levels when you enquire so the boat, guide ratio, and pricing are built correctly from the start.
