Batu Bolong Dive runs it for experienced divers who already hold an advanced-level certification and want to dive the pinnacle properly instead of surviving it. Group sizes are kept small, the briefing is longer than a standard day, and the whole schedule is anchored to the tidal exchange.
Why does Batu Bolong need a current-focused approach?
Batu Bolong is a submerged pinnacle rising from deep water in a tidal channel, so the flow splits around it and accelerates at the corners while the lee side stays comparatively calm. That single piece of geography explains almost every rule the guide applies: the entry is placed upstream of the shelter, the group stays on the protected face, and nobody rounds the corner into the flow. Down-currents can occur at pinnacles of this kind, which is why the trip is limited to divers with the buoyancy control and gas discipline to respond calmly rather than by finning harder.
Two divers can experience the same site an hour apart and describe it completely differently. The skill this trip teaches is reading which of those two sites you are actually on before you commit to a plan.

Who is eligible for this trip?
Eligibility is checked before booking, not on the boat, and we will decline a request rather than take an underprepared diver to a pinnacle in a strong exchange. The baseline is an advanced-level certification plus recent, current-relevant experience.

What equipment matters most here?
A reef hook and a surface marker buoy are the two items that change a current dive more than anything else in the kit list, and both are only useful if you have used them before. Tanks, weights and guiding are arranged in the trip. Rental sets are available if requested in advance with your height and shoe size, but personal items are worth bringing.

Every dive on this trip has a stated turn criterion agreed before entry, covering gas, time and position, and the guide will end a dive on any one of them. The boat stays live during the dive rather than anchoring, so pickup happens where the group surfaces instead of where it started. Divers stay in the same buddy pairs the whole day, and the group does not split to chase a sighting.

We will tell you honestly whether this trip fits, and if it does not, which format does. We then confirm the departure window for your date, the current Komodo National Park entry charges, the boat type and a written total. Park charges are revised periodically, so we quote the amount applying to your date rather than a published figure. Do I need a formal drift diving certification to join?
No formal drift qualification is required, but an advanced-level open water certification is, along with recent dives and demonstrable comfort in moving water. What we assess is behaviour rather than a card: controlled descent without a line, stable buoyancy at depth, predictable gas use and calm response to a changed plan. If your experience is thin in those areas, we will suggest a build-up day first.
Can I use a reef hook at Batu Bolong?
Yes, and it is genuinely useful at a pinnacle where holding position lets you watch rather than fight the water. The condition is that it goes into dead rock or rubble, never into living coral, and the line stays short enough that you cannot swing into the reef. If you have never used one, the guide will cover placement and release in the briefing before the dive.
What is the maximum group size?
Groups on this trip are deliberately smaller than on a standard dive day, because a guide in current can only track a limited number of divers reliably. We confirm the exact ratio for your date when you book, since it depends on the boat and on the divers already booked. If a booking would push a group past a workable size, we open a second guided group instead.
Is this trip suitable for a diver returning after a long break?
Not as a first dive back. Skills that matter here, particularly descent control and gas management, fade faster than most divers expect. The practical route is a refresher dive on a gentler site earlier in your stay, then this trip once the guide has seen you in the water.
